Aqua Affinity

Increases underwater mining speed to be the same as on land.

Overview

Aqua Affinity is a rare armor enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Aqua Affinity removes the heavy mining-speed penalty you normally suffer while your head is underwater, letting you break blocks at full land speed beneath the surface.

There is only one level to it, so nothing needs upgrading — the instant it goes on your helmet you have the whole effect (Removes the 5x mining speed penalty while underwater).

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Aqua Affinity exists at a single level only, so there is no scaling curve to climb — applying it to your helmet hands you the complete effect in one step, with no Aqua Affinity II to chase.

There is one level with no scaling. Without it, mining underwater takes roughly five times as long; with it, the penalty for being submerged disappears entirely, which is transformative for any underwater excavation.

Compatible Items

Compatibility & Conflicts

Aqua Affinity fits exactly one item — the helmet — and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated helmet enchantment through and through.

Aqua Affinity has no exclusivity conflicts at all, so you can layer it onto a helmet alongside every other enchantment that helmet accepts without having to give anything up.

How to Get It

Aqua Affinity can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of I on a helmet generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 6. When the enchanting table refuses to offer Aqua Affinity, the same enchantment is available as a book from loot chest and villager trading for anvil application.

Its selection weight of 2 makes Aqua Affinity a rare roll: it surfaces only now and then on a helmet, so you may need to re-roll several times or simply trade a villager for the book.

Tips & Best Combinations

A must-have on a helmet used for ocean work. Clearing a monument or digging out an underwater base is painfully slow without it. It pairs naturally with Respiration, since the two together solve both of the major problems of working underwater — breath and speed.

For the strongest setup, pair Aqua Affinity with Respiration, Unbreaking, Mending and Protection — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

A practical note: without Aqua Affinity, mining underwater takes 5 times longer. This enchantment removes that penalty entirely. Does not affect the additional 5x penalty for not standing on solid ground.

Aqua Affinity FAQ

What is the maximum level of Aqua Affinity in Minecraft?
Aqua Affinity is a single-level enchantment — there is no Aqua Affinity II in vanilla, so once it is on your helmet you already have everything it offers.
How do you get Aqua Affinity in survival?
The easiest source of Aqua Affinity is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level I from about experience level 6. Failing that, the book version of Aqua Affinity can be found through loot chest and villager trading and joined to your helmet on an anvil.
Which items can Aqua Affinity go on?
Just the helmet — Aqua Affinity is exclusive to it in vanilla 1.21, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
What does Aqua Affinity actually do?
It cancels the five-times mining-speed penalty you get when your head is underwater. With it equipped, you break blocks just as fast submerged as you would on dry land.
Do I still mine slowly if I'm floating in water?
Aqua Affinity removes the underwater-head penalty, but if you are also not standing on solid ground there is a separate slowdown for mining while floating. For full speed, stand on the bottom while you dig.
