Blast Protection

Reduces explosion damage and knockback from explosions.

Overview

Blast Protection is a rare armor enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Blast Protection guards specifically against explosions, softening the damage from creepers, TNT, beds in the wrong dimension, and the wither's blasts, while also reducing the knockback they throw at you.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost — 8% explosion damage reduction, -15% explosion knockback — and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 4 (IV) on your chestplate.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Blast Protection tops out at level 4, shown as IV on the chestplate, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Each of its four levels cuts 8% of explosion damage, up to 32% on one piece, and additionally trims explosion knockback by about 15% per level. A full set therefore both keeps you alive through a creeper hit and stops it from launching you off a ledge.

These enchantments cannot be combined with Blast Protection on the same item.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Blast Protection can be placed on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots, giving you a handful of choices for where it does the most good depending on how you play.

Blast Protection cannot share an item with Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection. All of these sit in the same mutually-exclusive group as Blast Protection, so an item can wear only one of them at once and you choose which playstyle to commit to.

How to Get It

Blast Protection can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of IV on a chestplate generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 8. Should the table prove stingy with Blast Protection, you can instead source the book from loot chest and villager trading and anvil it on.

Its selection weight of 2 makes Blast Protection a rare roll: it surfaces only now and then on a chestplate, so you may need to re-roll several times or simply trade a villager for the book.

Tips & Best Combinations

A targeted choice for explosive situations — wither fights, creeper-dense areas, raids with TNT, or PvP against bed and crystal bombs. It shares the exclusivity group with the other protections, so it is a swap-in for danger rather than an everyday enchantment.

For the strongest setup, pair Blast Protection with Unbreaking, Mending and Feather Falling — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

Keep in mind: reduces explosion damage by 8% per level. Also reduces explosion knockback by 15% per level. Stacks across armor pieces.

How do you get Blast Protection in survival?
The easiest source of Blast Protection is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level IV from about experience level 8. If the rolls go against you, look for the Blast Protection book among loot chest and villager trading, then apply it with an anvil.
Which items can Blast Protection go on?
Blast Protection can be applied to helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots — those are the only items in 1.21 that accept it.
Is Blast Protection good for the wither fight?
Yes — the wither attacks with explosive skulls, and Blast Protection meaningfully cuts that damage and the knockback, making it a popular choice for a dedicated wither-killing set alongside Protection on the rest.
Does Blast Protection reduce knockback?
It reduces explosion knockback specifically, by roughly 15% per level. That can be the difference between standing your ground and being blasted into lava or off a cliff during a creeper or crystal hit.
