Thorns

Reflects some damage back to attackers when hit.

Overview

Thorns is a very rare armor enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Thorns turns your armor into a counterattack, giving a chance to reflect damage back at anything that strikes you in melee or with a projectile.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost — 15% chance to deal 1-4 damage to attacker — and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 3 (III) on your chestplate.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Thorns tops out at level 3, shown as III on the chestplate, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Each of its three levels adds a 15% chance to reflect, so Thorns III triggers about 45% of the time, dealing a small 1–4 points of damage when it does. The catch is durability: a triggered Thorns hit costs the armor extra wear, so it eats through pieces faster than other enchantments.

Compatible Items

Compatibility & Conflicts

Thorns can be placed on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots, giving you a handful of choices for where it does the most good depending on how you play.

Thorns has no exclusivity conflicts at all, so you can layer it onto an item alongside every other enchantment that item accepts without having to give anything up.

How to Get It

Thorns can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of III on a chestplate generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 10. Should the table prove stingy with Thorns, you can instead source the book from loot chest and villager trading and anvil it on.

Its selection weight of 1 makes Thorns a very rare roll: it surfaces only now and then on a chestplate, so you may need to re-roll several times or simply trade a villager for the book.

Tips & Best Combinations

A fun but inefficient pick. The reflected damage is minor and the durability cost is steep, so it is more of a flavour enchantment than a serious defensive one. Always pair it with high Unbreaking and Mending to offset the wear, and do not expect it to win fights on its own.

For the strongest setup, pair Thorns with Unbreaking, Mending and Protection — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

Keep in mind: causes 2 durability damage to the armor piece regardless of whether damage was reflected. Chance is 15% per level. At Thorns III, there is a 45% chance of reflecting damage.

Thorns FAQ

What is the maximum level of Thorns in Minecraft?
Thorns reaches a maximum of level 3 (III) on a chestplate, which is the highest you can get legitimately in 1.21 without commands or external tools.
How do you get Thorns in survival?
The easiest source of Thorns is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level III from about experience level 10. If the rolls go against you, look for the Thorns book among loot chest and villager trading, then apply it with an anvil.
Which items can Thorns go on?
Thorns can be applied to helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots — those are the only items in 1.21 that accept it.
Why does Thorns wear out my armor so fast?
Every time Thorns reflects damage it inflicts extra durability loss on the armor piece, on top of normal damage. That is the main reason players keep it on a single piece with strong Unbreaking and Mending rather than a whole set.
How much damage does Thorns deal back?
A small, random 1 to 4 points per trigger, with about a 45% chance to fire at Thorns III. It is enough to chip away at attackers over time but not enough to rely on as your main source of damage.
