Density

Increases the damage dealt by the mace based on fall distance, adding extra damage per block fallen.

Overview

Density is an uncommon special enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Density supercharges the mace's signature falling smash, adding extra damage for every block you have dropped before the blow connects.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost — +0.5 extra damage per block fallen — and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 5 (V) on your mace.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Density tops out at level 5, shown as V on the mace, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Each of its five levels adds 0.5 extra damage per block fallen, so Density V adds 2.5 damage for each block of your fall on top of the mace's already brutal base smash. The further you fall, the more the bonus compounds, which is what makes high-altitude mace attacks so devastating.

Incompatible With

These enchantments cannot be combined with Density on the same item.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Density fits exactly one item — the mace — and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated mace enchantment through and through.

Density cannot share a mace with Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Breach. All of these sit in the same mutually-exclusive group as Density, so a mace can wear only one of them at once and you choose which playstyle to commit to.

How to Get It

Density can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of V on a mace generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 11. Should the table prove stingy with Density, you can instead source the book from loot chest and villager trading and anvil it on.

Its selection weight of 5 makes Density an uncommon roll: it appears with middling frequency when enchanting a mace — common enough to plan around, but not guaranteed on any given roll.

Tips & Best Combinations

The headline damage enchantment for the mace and the one most builds prioritise. Combined with Wind Burst for chained aerial smashes, Density turns the mace into the highest single-hit weapon in the game. It conflicts with Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Breach, so you commit the mace to one damage path.

For the strongest setup, pair Density with Wind Burst, Unbreaking and Mending — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

Keep in mind: exclusive to the mace. Adds 0.5 extra damage per block fallen per level on top of the base mace smash attack damage. Synergizes with Wind Burst for repeated smash attacks.

Density FAQ

What is the maximum level of Density in Minecraft?
Density reaches a maximum of level 5 (V) on a mace, which is the highest you can get legitimately in 1.21 without commands or external tools.
How do you get Density in survival?
The easiest source of Density is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level V from about experience level 11. If the rolls go against you, look for the Density book among loot chest and villager trading, then apply it with an anvil.
Which items can Density go on?
Just the mace — Density is exclusive to it in vanilla 1.21, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
Does Density only work when falling?
The bonus damage applies to the mace's smash attack, which is triggered by falling onto a target. On a flat ground hit with no fall distance, Density adds nothing — its whole value comes from the height of the drop.
Can I use Density and Breach together?
No — both are mace damage enchantments in the same exclusivity group, so they cannot coexist. You choose between raw fall damage (Density) and armor penetration (Breach) for a given mace.
