Lunge

Throws you forward after a spear's piercing attack, at the cost of hunger.

Overview

Lunge is an uncommon special enchantment in Minecraft. Lunge fires after a spear's piercing attack. The game takes the direction you are looking, drops the vertical part of it and adds what is left to your motion, so the shove is always flat no matter where you aim. That flattening is also why the angle matters: looking straight ahead spends the whole impulse on distance, while a 45 degree tilt keeps only about 70% of it.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost (0.458 blocks per tick forward, 4 exhaustion), and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 3 (III) on your spear.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Lunge tops out at level 3, shown as III on the spear, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Each level adds another 0.458 blocks per tick, so level III shoves you forward at 1.374 for the tick it fires, close to five times the 0.28 blocks per tick that sprinting sustains before drag pulls it back down. Hunger climbs at the same rate: 4 exhaustion at level I, 12 at level III, which is half a drumstick per lunge against one and a half.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Lunge fits exactly one item (the spear), and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated spear enchantment through and through.

Lunge has no exclusivity conflicts at all, so you can layer it onto a spear alongside every other enchantment that spear accepts without having to give anything up.

How to Get It

Lunge can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where the level you pay and the enchantability of a spear together decide which level of it you can be offered, up to III. When the enchanting table refuses to offer Lunge, the same enchantment is available as a book from loot chest, villager trading and fishing for anvil application.

Its selection weight of 5 makes Lunge an uncommon roll: it appears with middling frequency when enchanting a spear: common enough to plan around, but not guaranteed on any given roll.

What the Table Has to Roll

Rolled on a golden spear, the best Lunge can be enchanted on, enchantability 22 adds up to 10 points to your experience level before the window below is checked.

At the level 30 slot the rolled power lands in the window for Lunge III 95% of the time.

II13 to 20never
III21 to 4195%

Applying the book on an anvil costs 2 levels per enchantment level, before the anvil adds its own charge for the work you have already done to the item.

Tips & Best Combinations

The one enchantment that is only about movement. It turns the spear into a way to cross ground, close a gap or break off a fight, and because the impulse ignores your vertical aim it never launches you into a fall you did not plan. The price is hunger: at level III every lunge eats one and a half drumsticks, so the enchantment is only as good as the food in your inventory.

For the strongest setup, pair Lunge with Looting, Unbreaking and Mending: the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

A practical note: only spears accept it, from wooden through netherite and copper included. The push follows the direction you are looking with the vertical part stripped out, so it is always flat: aiming level gives the whole impulse and a 45 degree angle keeps about 70% of it. Nothing happens while you are riding, gliding with an elytra or in water, and a player under 7 hunger gets no push at all. Every lunge also takes 1 durability off the spear.

Lunge FAQ

What is the maximum level of Lunge in Minecraft?
Lunge reaches a maximum of level 3 (III) on a spear, which is the highest you can get legitimately without commands or external tools.
How do you get Lunge in survival?
The easiest source of Lunge is the enchanting table. Which level it may offer depends on the power the table rolls, which is the experience level you spend plus a bonus drawn from the item's own enchantability. Failing that, the book version of Lunge can be found through loot chest, villager trading and fishing and joined to your spear on an anvil.
Which items can Lunge go on?
Just the spear: Lunge is exclusive to it in vanilla, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
Why does Lunge sometimes do nothing?
Four situations switch it off completely: sitting in a boat or on any other mount, gliding with an elytra, being in water, and dropping below 7 hunger. The hunger cut is the one that catches people out, because it is checked before the push and not after, so a hungry player gets no warning beyond the spear simply not moving them.
How far does a lunge take you?
That depends on where you point it. The push is added to the motion you already have, so lunging out of a sprint carries further than lunging from standing, and it is applied flat: the vertical part of your aim is thrown away before the impulse is added. Aim level to spend all of it on distance.
What else can go on a spear?
Spears take Unbreaking, Mending, Knockback, Looting and the Curse of Vanishing besides Lunge. They are not in the group that accepts Sharpness, Smite or Bane of Arthropods, so a spear cannot be built into a raw damage weapon the way a sword can.
