Flame

Arrows shot from the bow are set on fire, igniting targets.

Overview

Flame is a rare ranged enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Flame sets every arrow you fire alight, so each shot ignites its target and deals burning damage over time in addition to the arrow's normal impact.

There is only one level to it, so nothing needs upgrading — the instant it goes on your bow you have the whole effect (Arrows set targets on fire for 5 seconds (4 fire damage / 2 hearts)).

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Flame exists at a single level only, so there is no scaling curve to climb — applying it to your bow hands you the complete effect in one step, with no Flame II to chase.

There is a single level. A Flame arrow that hits a mob burns it for about 5 seconds, dealing roughly 4 points of fire damage on top of the hit, and the flaming arrow can also light TNT, campfires and candles from a distance.

Compatible Items

Compatibility & Conflicts

Flame fits exactly one item — the bow — and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated bow enchantment through and through.

Flame has no exclusivity conflicts at all, so you can layer it onto a bow alongside every other enchantment that bow accepts without having to give anything up.

How to Get It

Flame can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of I on a bow generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 10. When the enchanting table refuses to offer Flame, the same enchantment is available as a book from loot chest and villager trading for anvil application.

Its selection weight of 2 makes Flame a rare roll: it surfaces only now and then on a bow, so you may need to re-roll several times or simply trade a villager for the book.

Tips & Best Combinations

A strong, cheap addition to any combat bow. The free damage-over-time finishes mobs that survive the initial arrow, and the remote-ignition trick — lighting TNT cannons or campfires safely — is genuinely useful. It pairs perfectly with Infinity since you never run out of fire arrows.

For the strongest setup, pair Flame with Power, Infinity, Punch and Unbreaking — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

A practical note: flame arrows can also light TNT and campfires. Does not work on fire-immune mobs.

Flame FAQ

What is the maximum level of Flame in Minecraft?
Flame is a single-level enchantment — there is no Flame II in vanilla, so once it is on your bow you already have everything it offers.
How do you get Flame in survival?
The easiest source of Flame is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level I from about experience level 10. Failing that, the book version of Flame can be found through loot chest and villager trading and joined to your bow on an anvil.
Which items can Flame go on?
Just the bow — Flame is exclusive to it in vanilla 1.21, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
Can Flame arrows light TNT?
Yes. A Flame arrow ignites TNT, campfires and candles on contact, which makes a Flame bow a convenient remote detonator and a safe way to light hard-to-reach fires.
Do Flame arrows work underwater or on Nether mobs?
The fire is snuffed out underwater, and fire-immune Nether mobs like blazes and ghasts ignore the burn entirely — though the arrow's normal impact damage still lands.
