Depth Strider

Increases underwater movement speed.

Overview

Depth Strider is a rare armor enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Depth Strider counters the drag of water, letting you walk and swim horizontally through it at close to your normal land speed.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost — Reduces water slowdown by 1/3 — and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 3 (III) on your boots.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Depth Strider tops out at level 3, shown as III on the boots, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Its three levels each remove a third of the water slowdown, so Depth Strider III erases it entirely and you move through water as fast as across ground. It affects horizontal movement only — it does not speed up swimming straight up or down — and it conflicts with Frost Walker.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Depth Strider fits exactly one item — the boots — and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated boots enchantment through and through.

Depth Strider cannot share a boots with Frost Walker. Because of that single conflict you have to pick either Depth Strider or Frost Walker for any given boots — never both.

How to Get It

Depth Strider can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where reaching its top level of III on a boots generally wants a fully bookshelf-powered table at roughly level 6. Players who would rather not gamble for Depth Strider can hunt the book down through loot chest and villager trading and apply it at an anvil.

Its selection weight of 2 makes Depth Strider a rare roll: it surfaces only now and then on a boots, so you may need to re-roll several times or simply trade a villager for the book.

Tips & Best Combinations

Excellent for anyone who spends time in or around water, from ocean explorers to riverside base-builders. It competes for the boot slot with Frost Walker, so you choose between gliding through water and walking on top of it; for underwater work, Depth Strider wins easily.

For the strongest setup, pair Depth Strider with Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Unbreaking and Mending — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

Worth remembering: at Depth Strider III, you move at the same speed in water as on land. Does not increase vertical movement speed (swimming up/down). Cannot be combined with Frost Walker.

Depth Strider FAQ

What is the maximum level of Depth Strider in Minecraft?
Depth Strider reaches a maximum of level 3 (III) on a boots, which is the highest you can get legitimately in 1.21 without commands or external tools.
How do you get Depth Strider in survival?
The easiest source of Depth Strider is the enchanting table — a bookshelf-maxed table can offer level III from about experience level 6. Alternatively, pick up a Depth Strider book from loot chest and villager trading and fuse it onto your boots at an anvil.
Which items can Depth Strider go on?
Just the boots — Depth Strider is exclusive to it in vanilla 1.21, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
Does Depth Strider make me swim faster?
It removes the slowdown for horizontal movement in water, so you travel sideways at land speed. It does not change how fast you rise or sink, so vertical swimming is unaffected.
Can I have Depth Strider and Frost Walker together?
No — they are mutually exclusive and both occupy the boots. You pick one: move quickly through water with Depth Strider, or freeze it solid and walk across the top with Frost Walker.
