Loyalty

Causes the trident to return to the player after being thrown.

Overview

Loyalty is an uncommon ranged enchantment in Minecraft. Loyalty makes a thrown trident fly back to your hand after it lands, so you can use it as a ranged weapon without losing it.

Its opening level already delivers a noticeable boost (Trident returns slowly), and it climbs from there to a maximum of level 3 (III) on your trident.

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Loyalty tops out at level 3, shown as III on the trident, and the gap between the levels is where the enchantment's character really lives.

Its three levels govern only the return speed: higher levels bring the trident back faster. The mechanic itself is binary: at any level the trident comes home, as long as you have not thrown it into the void.

These enchantments cannot be combined with Loyalty on the same item.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Loyalty fits exactly one item (the trident), and nothing else will accept it, so it is a dedicated trident enchantment through and through.

Loyalty cannot share a trident with Riptide. Because of that single conflict you have to pick either Loyalty or Riptide for any given trident, never both.

How to Get It

Loyalty can be rolled directly at an enchanting table, where the level you pay and the enchantability of a trident together decide which level of it you can be offered, up to III. If the table is not cooperating, the Loyalty book also comes from loot chest and villager trading, ready to apply on an anvil.

Its selection weight of 5 makes Loyalty an uncommon roll: it appears with middling frequency when enchanting a trident: common enough to plan around, but not guaranteed on any given roll.

What the Table Has to Roll

The numbers below are for a trident, which carries enchantability 1, the lowest value in the game. The table adds nothing on top of your experience level for it, so the power here is your level plus one, give or take 15%.

100% of level 30 rolls produce a power inside the window for Loyalty III.

II19 to 25never
III26 to 50100%

Applying the book on an anvil costs 2 levels per enchantment level, before the anvil adds its own charge for the work you have already done to the item.

Tips & Best Combinations

Effectively required to use a trident as a throwing weapon at all: without it, every throw means walking to fetch your weapon. Loyalty III is the comfortable default. Its only conflict is Riptide, which represents the opposite, melee-launch playstyle.

For the strongest setup, pair Loyalty with Channeling, Impaling, Unbreaking and Mending: the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

One detail to keep in mind: higher levels make the trident return faster. If the player dies while the trident is returning, it drops as an item. The trident does not return if thrown into the void.

Loyalty FAQ

What is the maximum level of Loyalty in Minecraft?
Loyalty reaches a maximum of level 3 (III) on a trident, which is the highest you can get legitimately without commands or external tools.
How do you get Loyalty in survival?
The easiest source of Loyalty is the enchanting table. Which level it may offer depends on the power the table rolls, which is the experience level you spend plus a bonus drawn from the item's own enchantability. Otherwise a Loyalty book turns up via loot chest and villager trading, which you then combine onto the trident using an anvil.
Which items can Loyalty go on?
Just the trident: Loyalty is exclusive to it in vanilla, and you will not be able to apply the enchantment to anything else.
What happens to a Loyalty trident if I die?
If you die while it is mid-return, the trident drops as an item where it lands rather than teleporting to your corpse, so you may need to go collect it.
Does a Loyalty trident return from the void?
No. If you throw it off the world into the void it is lost for good: Loyalty only retrieves a trident that has something to land on or travel back from.
