Curse of Vanishing

Curse

Causes the item to disappear (be deleted) upon the player's death instead of dropping.

Overview

Curse of Vanishing is a very rare general-purpose enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Curse of Vanishing destroys the item when you die instead of dropping it, so cursed gear never reaches your grave or the ground for anyone to recover.

There is only one level to it, so nothing needs upgrading — the instant it goes on almost any piece of gear you have the whole effect (Item is destroyed on death instead of dropping).

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Curse of Vanishing exists at a single level only, so there is no scaling curve to climb — applying it to your gear hands you the complete effect in one step, with no Curse of Vanishing II to chase.

A single-level curse with no scaling. The item vanishes on death even if keepInventory is turned off, and the curse cannot be ground off at a grindstone — once it is on an item, it stays.

Compatible Items

Compatibility & Conflicts

Curse of Vanishing is about as universal as enchantments come — it goes on sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, bow, crossbow, trident, fishing rod, helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots, elytra and mace, which is to say nearly every durable item you own can run it, making it a default consideration on any new piece of gear.

Curse of Vanishing has no exclusivity conflicts at all, so you can layer it onto an item alongside every other enchantment that item accepts without having to give anything up.

How to Get It

As a curse, Curse of Vanishing is never offered by an enchanting table. It turns up only as loot chest, villager trading and fishing, and once it is on your gear it cannot be ground off.

Tips & Best Combinations

Almost always a drawback, since it means losing the item permanently if you die. The one genuine use is PvP, where it stops opponents from looting your gear off your corpse. Outside that, players avoid it and prefer items without it.

Keep in mind: a curse enchantment. Cannot be removed via grindstone. The item vanishes on death even if keepInventory is false. Can be useful in PvP to prevent enemies from taking your gear.

Curse of Vanishing FAQ

What is the maximum level of Curse of Vanishing in Minecraft?
Curse of Vanishing is a single-level enchantment — there is no Curse of Vanishing II in vanilla, so once it is on your gear you already have everything it offers.
How do you get Curse of Vanishing in survival?
Being a curse, Curse of Vanishing never comes from an enchanting table — you only encounter it as loot chest, villager trading and fishing, and no grindstone can strip it off your gear afterward.
Can I remove Curse of Vanishing?
Not with a grindstone — curses are immune to grindstone removal. The only ways to be rid of it are to stop using the item or, in creative-style workflows, to overwrite the item entirely.
Is Curse of Vanishing ever useful?
Mainly in PvP, where having your gear vanish on death denies it to the player who killed you. For ordinary survival it is purely a downside, since it costs you the item if you die.
