Mending

Treasure

Uses experience orbs to repair the item instead of adding to the player's experience bar.

Overview

Mending is a rare general-purpose enchantment in Minecraft 1.21. Mending repairs your gear automatically by diverting experience orbs into durability: whenever you collect XP while holding or wearing a Mending item, the orbs fix it instead of filling your XP bar.

There is only one level to it, so nothing needs upgrading — the instant it goes on almost any piece of gear you have the whole effect (Each XP orb repairs 2 durability points on a random mending item).

Max Level & Effect Scaling

Mending exists at a single level only, so there is no scaling curve to climb — applying it to your gear hands you the complete effect in one step, with no Mending II to chase.

It has a single level. Each absorbed XP point restores 2 durability to a damaged Mending item; if every Mending item you carry is already full, the experience flows normally to your level bar. Crucially, it cannot share a bow with Infinity.

Compatible Items

Incompatible With

These enchantments cannot be combined with Mending on the same item.

Compatibility & Conflicts

Mending is about as universal as enchantments come — it goes on sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, bow, crossbow, trident, fishing rod, helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots, elytra and mace, which is to say nearly every durable item you own can run it, making it a default consideration on any new piece of gear.

Mending cannot share an item with Infinity. Because of that single conflict you have to pick either Mending or Infinity for any given item — never both.

How to Get It

Mending is a treasure enchantment, which means an enchanting table will never produce it. Your only routes are villager trading, loot chest, fishing and raid drops, after which you combine the book onto your gear with an anvil.

Tips & Best Combinations

One of the most valuable enchantments in the entire game and the cornerstone of any long-term gear set. Paired with Unbreaking it makes tools, weapons and armor effectively immortal as long as you keep gaining experience. Its only restriction is the hard conflict with Infinity on bows.

For the strongest setup, pair Mending with Unbreaking, Efficiency, Sharpness and Protection — the durability enchantments in particular keep the item alive long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

Keep in mind: treasure enchantment - cannot be obtained from enchanting tables. Each XP orb repairs 2 durability. If the item is fully repaired, remaining XP goes to the player. One of the most valuable enchantments in the game.

Mending FAQ

What is the maximum level of Mending in Minecraft?
Mending is a single-level enchantment — there is no Mending II in vanilla, so once it is on your gear you already have everything it offers.
How do you get Mending in survival?
Mending is treasure-only, so no enchanting table will ever roll it; you have to obtain it as villager trading, loot chest, fishing and raid drops and then attach the book to your gear on an anvil.
Why can't Mending and Infinity go on the same bow?
They are mutually exclusive by design. Infinity gives endless arrows but lets the bow wear out; Mending keeps the bow repaired but still spends arrows. You choose one philosophy per bow.
Can I get Mending from an enchanting table?
No — Mending is a treasure enchantment. You can only get it from villager trades, loot chests, fishing or raid drops, and then apply the book with an anvil.
